OPM Group develops Multi Dex for the health and pharma sectors

OPM Group (‘OPM’), a leading UK-headquartered manufacturer of innovative flexible packaging and labels, has launched Multi Dex, a new innovative label solution that helps health and pharma businesses achieve more with less.

Multi Dex combines the best qualities of both labels and booklets through an innovative multi-layer peel and reseal design that can be opened and read like an indexed book, while retaining a small on-pack footprint.

Multi Dex makes it simple for pharma business to include a wide range of information on pack such as usage instructions, safety advice and multi-lingual translations, enabling complete ease of use for patients and end-users. The solution also offers tamper-evidence to underpin patient safety and security.

The design directly challenges the pharmaceutical product roadblock wherein large amounts of regulatory compliance data is required for patient safety but with only limited space on pack.

Susan Ellison, joint MD at OPM, explains the significance of the launch: “Evolving regulations in the pharma sector can be a real pressure point for businesses of every size. The upshot is that our customers need to include more information on packs in the interest of patient safety, but typically only have a limited footprint to work with. The result is often a lot of important information crammed into a small space, making it very difficult for the patient or caregiver to read, let alone understand. Fundamentally, making this information easier to access becomes a matter of safety, which is partly what has driven us to develop and launch Multi Dex.

“Pharma business, both clinical and OTC, must include more information on packs as a matter of regulatory compliance. Answering this need, Multi Dex is deceptively simple in concept. It’s a multi-layered, multi substrate label design, produced with a highly curl resistant substrate, that can be opened and read like a book. It makes optimal use of space and enables the incorporation of far more information including usage instructions, diagrams, multiple languages and more. Since the label can be hinged and indexed on either the left or right edges, we can add up to 12 easily navigable layers on one label. Importantly, Multi Dex can also be incorporated directly into existing packing lines, avoiding any disruption or additional manual steps.

“Multi Dex is a powerful new tool for businesses in the health and pharma sectors, and we’re expecting to see the technology play a central role in supporting patient care and safety.”

The design and subsequent launch of Multi Dex is underpinned by the significant pharma industry experience of OPM Group, which operates from its Leeds-based facility in the UK. The business offers full product traceability with line change control and a fully digitalised camera-based Quality Assurance 100% inspection system for market-leading quality on every single run.

Bringing added peace of mind for its customers and to meet the rising global demand for products manufactured in controlled Critical Environments, the OPM Group facility is run to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) guidelines and Multi Dex labels are manufactured in a PS 9000-certified Controlled Environment Facility, where air temperature, quality, and humidity are precisely managed. These controls, which include microbiological monitoring programmes, protect material substrates from potential contamination and impurities. In addition, the company is certified to ISO:9001 2015 for its quality management system.

Susan adds: “What makes the difference for our customers is that Multi Dex is highly customisable depending on the application at hand. We work with businesses to ensure their pharma and medical products are user-friendly and quality controlled and we’re challenging our pharmaceutical customers to explore a new dimension in label design for patient and caregiver safety.”
