Personally, I was lucky enough to spend time in a professional sports environment in my younger years, being involved in the Leeds Carnegie Rugby Union set-up, which just so happened to use the same facility as the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team.
I was even more fortunate to have several encounters with Rob Burrow and many of those legendary Leeds Rhinos golden era players, be it the odd conversation in the physio and rehab rooms, between sessions in the weights room or standing in line at Kirkstall Morrisons where every player would rush to on mass, during the lunch break.
What always struck me in these brief moments was how down to earth and humble such legends of the game were, you wouldn’t of known that team full of globally recognised superstars had just won 3 super leagues on the bounce and were setting records each year.
The argument of which is better, League or Union, could go on for weeks but one thing I think all rugby fans would agree on is that how Rob Burrow played the game made you fall in love with the game of Rugby, whichever code we’re talking!
He was a once in a generation type of talent, the world of sport has lost a true legend and fighter.
Rob was a “passionate advocate” for MND to raise awareness and funding for people with the “brutal” disease. As a lasting tribute the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds will help to
to give people living with MND the best quality of life. The centre’s construction is being funded by Leeds Hospitals Charity, the charity of Leeds Teaching Hospitals where Burrow received treatment. It has raised more than £5.6m of its £6.8m target.
It is important to raise funds and achieve the target to finish the centre.
