The new Multi Dex from OPM is a peel & read label with a difference!
Conventional peel & read labels have great purpose but they come with limitations. In designing the Multi Dex label, OPM looked to re-invent the concept and bring a new level of innovation to the popular peel & read format.
Traditionally used where space is limited on pack, peel & read multi-layer labels present an opportunity to convey a wide variety of information to consumers, for example multiple languages, legal requirements, warnings and instructions, without the need for additional packaging such as leaflets or sleeves.
However, conventional production methods restrict the number of colours per page and by adding additional pages, the size of the finished label is also restricted. Furthermore, with all pages made from the same substrate, conventional peel & read labels can become bulky, leading to application issues on curved containers and restricting marketing creativity and branding opportunities.
With a conventional multi-layer label, individual pages are all the same size and usually held together by a single hinge at one side. Pages are accessed by peeling away a corner of a page to reveal the lower layer – something that can prove irksome if you do not have any nails!
Multi Dex removes all these challenges, for the brand, printer and consumer!
It is a multi-layered, multi-indexed, multi-substrate and multi-coloured peel & read label, which enables brands to maintain eye-catching shelf appeal while providing a functional label that provides extra space for brand information.
A novel ‘tab’ feature creates an easy-to-use index system and can point a consumer directly to their specific point of interest – brand information, instructions, guidelines, warnings or language. The ‘tab’ feature also creates a height difference within the layers for easier opening and each layer can be resealed again and again thanks to its unique adhesive formulation.
The multiple adhesive layers are connected by a hinge that can be positioned in different areas, providing for opening from the right or left side, central or a combination. A single action opening of all layers is possible too.
Additionally, certain layers can be made non-adhesive and detachable – ideal for promotional coupons, proof of purchase or as a user information leaflet, for example. Plus, sections of layers can be made detachable but still with adhesive; a perfect solution for affixing to receipts, guarantee cards or patient records.
To enhance the aesthetic of the label, Multi Dex can have different materials within the layers, multiple cutting allowing each layer to be a different shape or size, variable data within the layers, and additional decorative features, such as hot/cold foil, lamination, embossing or screen printing. A metallised PP top layer, for a premium appearance with total opacity, can be used with more cost-effective standard PP lower layers, for example.
This clever label format can be easily applied to packs and products of various shapes and sizes, with the added benefit that the label materials provide curl resistance that can occur on shaped and cylindrical containers.
All of this can be produced in a single pass with the added reassurance of two 100% Electronic Inspection systems, comparing every printed image to the Approved PDF to ensure brands receive the highest quality finished product.
