More brand owners are moving towards sustainable packaging so that they can meet consumer demand, stay ahead of key regulatory compliance and improve their environmental credentials – especially when it comes to single-use packaging. As a key supplier of packaging and labels to the beauty and cosmetics industries, OPM Group is continually looking at ways to reduce the environmental impact of our materials, manufacturing processes and products, to help customers meet their crucial sustainability targets and connect with today’s engaged audience. OPM Group maximises focus on sustainability by working with suppliers who demonstrate that their ‘green’ credentials are more than skin deep; these suppliers source label materials from sustainably managed forests (PEFC & FSC – certified forests) and we have a commitment to recycling tricky waste such as silicone release liner trim. As a business, we prioritise suppliers offering eco-friendly alternatives alongside their traditional core products. These materials reduce waste and pollution by making better use of recycled or bio-based materials and help to close the loop in plastics and packaging. Material choice is also key to enabling the recyclability of a product at the end of its life, which is becoming ever more important to consumers. Another avenue for brands to consider is materials reduction – think thinner. OPM Group offers face stocks and liners that are up to 50% thinner than traditional products. These materials are manufactured using less oil, water, and energy, reducing the carbon footprint compared to many conventional label materials. The weight reduction also translates into lower transportation costs on the products retail journey, more labels per reel and less reel change downtime on your production lines. When looking at flexible packaging substrates that reduce the environmental impact of packaging, what options are available to brands and product designers?

One great option for brands and packaging designers is mineral-based materials, such as an eco-friendly label material that contains 80% marble mining waste and up to 20% recycled polyethylene, largely derived from plastic bottles. This material will disintegrate on its own after 9-14 months of exposure to sunlight or can be burned for energy. There is no yellowing over time and the material is completely waterproof, making it ideal for outdoor use applications. It is paper-like and matt in appearance and texture.
Another option for packaging designers is fruit pulp paper, face stocks produced from the waste materials sourced during beverage production. The material seeks to close the manufacturing loop – and thereby reduce overall waste. These materials have an attractive natural colour and texture and could be an ideal fit for organic beauty brands.
Offered as an alternative range, with face stocks made from 100% post-consumer-waste (paper) and films (rPP & rPE) with 92-99% chemically recycled PCWR content. Aside from being a wholly recycled material, it also has a fantastic appearance and quality.
Thin films such, as a 30um rPET clear on a 30um rPET liner, are perfect for C-on-Clear ‘No label look’ applications or aerosol cans as they reduce the material content (only use what you need) and can be easily recycled. Another option for cosmetics, beauty and personal care brands would be PE65 instead of the traditional PE85 film, which is ideal for squeezable applications such as toiletry products or creams.
Bagasse is a paper made from a sugar cane crop by-product that would otherwise go to waste, giving a resource a new life. The material exhibits excellent printability with UV flexo and is also available in a premium grade; thicker and with superior wet strength. The substrate is compatible with embossing features, to enhance the premium feel and visual appeal to consumers.
